ACP in La Jolla

The four student-run media publications won a total of 24 awards at the Associate Collegiate Press Conference in La Jolla.

All four of our entities won big at the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) conference on March 9 in La Jolla.

The ACP conference is a weekend full of networking opportunities for students to connect with other college students and industry professionals.

“It's a great opportunity to learn from peers and professionals,” said Daily 49er Editor-in-Chief, Christal Gaines-Emory. “We attend multiple panels per day focusing on a wide variety of topics, such as reporting on diverse communities, photojournalism, podcasting and more.”

The conference also hosts award ceremonies for their own organization but also the California College Media Awards (CCMA). While the ACP looks at colleges from across the country, CCMA’s focuses on the accomplishments of California colleges.

Gaines-Emory walked us through how they select which pieces they submit.

“My advisor Barb and I work together to choose our nominations, we also reach out to other editors for their opinions such as our Multimedia Managing editor El Nicklin and our photo editor Naoki Gima so their preferences are represented as well.” said Gaines-Emory.

The Daily 49er is no stranger to success at these conferences. The publication, who won two of ACP’s Online Pacemaker awards this year alone, added other ACP titles known as “Best of Show” under their belt. They won third place in digital newsletter, fourth place in website and ninth place in newspaper. The group won second place best infographic, second place best illustration, second place best photo series and third place best overall newspaper design.

Our other entities got in on the action as well. Our student magazine, DIG, known for their innovative designs and stories also won ACP’s Best of Show awards. The vibrant magazine won fourth place Feature magazine, ninth in Digital Newsletter and ninth in Website.

Long Beach State’s first and only student-run bilingual magazine also took home some big wins. ENYE formerly known as DÍG en Español took home first place SND Design Museum, third place Feature Magazine and sixth place People’s Choice at ACP. The publication also won big at the CCMA as the team won first place for Best Magazine Cover and third place for General Innovation.

Beach TV News, Long Beach State’s very own student produced newscast, took home awards at the conference as well. The team took home ACP’s first place in Broadcast News Story and Broadcast Feature Story. Third place in Broadcast Sports Story and fifth place in both Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Reporting and TV Newscast. For the CCMA’s they took first place in Best News Video, Best Non-News Video, and Social Justice Reporting.

The Beach Media team is incredibly proud of our student-run publications. Congratulations to everyone involved in executing amazing designs and stories.
